Clock Cards & Time Cards

Clock Cards & Time Cards

Clock cards are usually rectangular pieces of cardboard with the working days' hours and days of the week printed on them. These cards are used to accurately record employee hours worked and assisted the company payroll clerk when he worked out wages.

Each employees' clock card had a grid on it, to easily accomodate their clocking-in and clocking-out times for the whole week.

Clock Card History

In 1888, Daniel M Cooper was the first person to invent a time keeping machine. It used clock cards, much like those used today. His time recording machine was called the Rochester Recorder and it printed clocking-in and clocking-out on clock cards which were marked with the hours of a day and days of week.

In the early 20th century, others created similar time recorders and in 1911 several of them merged to form, what is know today as IBM. Soon after the merger, IBM was to develop time recorders' further. Giving them better accuaracy, range on printing colours to highlight lateness and a mechanism that automatically printed time once the clock card was inserted. Clock cards themselves haven't needed to change much as the working week has stayed largely the same since they were first introduced.
